Coolant for CNC Machines

Contact Us Today

ETNA Products, Inc. manufactures a wide range of MASTERALL® machining coolants, cutting oils, cutting fluids and CNC lubricants used in all types of machinery and metalworking operations including CNC machines, multi-spindle screw machines, vertical turning centers and more. Our MASTERALL® product line includes water soluble oils and neat oils developed for specific machining and metalworking processes that require excellent performance combined with extended system and improved tool life. ETNA Products, Inc. offers custom formulations to meet specific requirements.

MACHINING COOLANT FUNDAMENTALS

The purpose of using CNC coolants and neat oils during the machining process is to cool and lubricate the ferrous or non-ferrous metal being machined and the tool.  If the machine coolant fails to control the friction created by deformation, one or both contact surfaces is eroded.  This is the start of the failure of the tools within the operation. Besides creating this tenacious film, the microemulsion or neat oil must exhibit a number of other multi-functional properties, the most important of which are:

  • The water soluble coolant or neat oil must be able to withstand the high temperatures and pressures which occur during machining so that friction and wear are minimized.
  • The coolant for CNC machines must not be adversely affected by metallic contaminants or tramp oils that can possibly enter a lubrication system.
  • The microemulsion or neat oil must provide effective cooling to remove the heat generated by friction and deformation.
  • The coolant for machining should be non-toxic and easy to use.
  • The water soluble coolant or cutting oil should be readily cleanable with aqueous cleaners or solvent based cleaners.
  • The water soluble oil or neat oil should provide rust protection for the work piece and machine tool.

NEAT OIL LUBRICANTS VS. WATER SOLUBLE OILS

Historically, neat oils were used for machining, however over time operators have switched to water soluble oils. Neat oils consist of specialty base oils and additives, however they don’t contain any water. Water soluble oils may be:

  • soluble oils which have high oil content and may be diluted in water to form an emulsion
  • semi-synthetics which have less oil than soluble oils and mixed with water and additives
  • synthetics which contain no oil and mixed with water and additives

COOLANT MAINTENANCE

ETNA Products, Inc. can help develop and implement a thorough coolant maintenance program to prolong reservoir life and minimize disposal costs. During use in the machine, the coolant for CNC machines is affected by a wide variety of materials and conditions.  The high heat created by the cutting operation causes oxidation of the components and various metallic compounds can be formed.  In addition the machining operation depletes the various fatty additives, extreme pressure additives, corrosion inhibitors and biocides which are commonly used in coolant formulations.

Beyond components that increase or decrease with use, machining systems are constantly impacted by contaminants that enter the system.  These contaminants include “tramp” oil from sources such as leaking hydraulic systems or gear boxes, greases from bearings and other materials such as particulate and dissolved metals, metal oxides and abrasives.  Water soluble oils are also prone to degradation caused by contaminants such as bacteria and fungus.

We can help develop and implement a thorough coolant maintenance program to monitor the contaminants entering your machine and track the performance such as concentration and pH. Send us a request and we’ll quickly respond to fulfill your coolant for machining needs.
