  • Reducing tool price by extending the lifespan of the tool piece

CUTTING FLUID & CUTTING OIL FUNDAMENTALS

Industrial cutting fluids and cutting oils often produce functional problems for machining and grinding operations. These problems affect tool life, surface finish and grinding wheel loading or breakdown. Prior to troubleshooting the water based cutting fluid or cutting oil, it is important to analyze the following factors: cutting feed and speed, tooling material and set-up and grinding parameters. In addition, it’s important to know the machining process being completed, alloy of material, and surface finish requirements.

Exotic alloys, such as titanium and stainless steel, require a high performing cutting oil to reduce the flash point temperature at the workpiece and provide lubricity. Cutting oils are composed of specialty base oils and may include extreme pressure additives (chlorine, sulphur, phosphorus) and polar lubricants that provide the best lubricity, but the poorest cooling. Cutting fluids provide the benefits of cooling as they are mixed with water at a concentration between 3-10%. In addition, soluble oils provide excellent lubricity as they are formulated with mineral oil and other lubricity additives. Semi-synthetic and synthetic coolant formulations continue to evolve to meet new applications. These cutting fluids are formulated to resist bacteria growth, thus extending the life of the fluid while offering excellent lubricity. Although the upfront cost of semi-synthetic and synthetic coolants is high, the extended life of these cutting fluids allow for the overall cost of your operation to be lower.

ETNA Products, Inc. works with our customers to identify and solve problems regarding their machining operations. It is important not to ignore your machine tool coolants and cutting oils due to the heightened regulatory environment and changes in raw materials and formulations. Understanding the difference between costs of use versus cost of acquisition is critical.

The following factors should be considered when evaluating the water soluble cutting oil and your machine:

  • Analyzing how the fluid works at the point of cut
  • How the fluid is applied by analyzing the velocity and volume
  • Does the fluid reject tramp oil and if so can it be easily removed with a skimmer?
  • Is there any issue with chip build up in the machine which prevents the coolant from recirculating effectively?
  • Has a chip-handling system been installed to prevent chip accumulation?
  • Does the cutting fluid meet internal plant disposal requirements and external waste requirements?
  • Is the coolant concentrate compatible with the bellows, hydraulic hoses and electrical cables on your equipment?
  • Does the cutting oil or water soluble cutting oil meet internal and external environmental health and safety standards?

In addition to monitoring the cutting fluid, it is important to keep the reservoir clean by installing and using:

  • Barrier filters
  • Centrifugal separators (centrifuges or cyclones) that separate chips
  • Skimmers

CUTTING OIL MAINTENANCE

Etna Products’ line of MASTERALL® cutting fluids and cutting oils are designed to provide optimal heat transfer, high performance lubricity, easy swarf removal, anti-corrosion inhibitors, and numerous other additives to extend the life of your workpiece.

Contamination from bacteria and tramp oil may severely limit the life of your cutting fluids, thus increasing costs and causing system downtime. ETNA’s coolant maintenance program is comprehensive as we monitor the pH, concentration, tramp oil buildup, bacteria growth and fluid viscosities (where applicable). We work with our customers to help them monitor filter time cycle, system performance and any unusual operation conditions such as marked fluid color or appearance changes. Maintaining your cutting fluids for optimum efficiency and extended reservoir life depends upon regular monitoring and reporting.
