Drilling and Tapping Fluids
ETNA Products, Inc. understands how important cutting fluids are to maintaining the life of your tools. Whether it’s a lathe, drill bit, tap, or mill cutter, our selection of MASTERALL® CNC coolants are formulated to preserve the appearance and integrity of your machines and finished products. We offer a wide selection of MASTERALL® drilling fluids and industrial tapping fluids, as well as custom formulations to meet any consumer need.
DRILLING FLUIDS
The goal of using drilling fluids is to preserve any type of metallurgical drill bit you need to maintain. A high quality drilling fluid can extend the life of your drill bit by eliminating friction at the cutting bit, resulting in better tool life and providing excellent surface finish. Premium drilling fluids will also remove chips during the drilling process and flush them away. Most operators agree drilling is an easier machining operation when performed at higher speeds, requiring high levels of cooling.
TAPPING FLUIDS
Applying a high quality tapping lubricant to your tap will provide cost-savings by lowering maintenance costs. Taps can wear very quickly and mechanical tapping will result in overheating. Not only will a high quality tapping fluid increase the tap lifespan, it will also:
- Remove chips more efficiently
- Provide better workpiece control
- Create more accurate threads with better surface finish
- Require less sharpening
- Prevent bacterial growth
For optimal tap performance it’s critical for the tapping fluid to reach the cutting lands of the tap at all times, regardless of the tapping angle.
Our MASTERALL® tapping fluid line-up features both neat cutting oils and water soluble oils for optimal tap maintenance. We always recommend water soluble oils for both non-ferrous and non-metallic materials. For some exotic alloys, it can be a challenge to use water soluble oils, as their metallurgy demands the lubricity of a neat cutting oil. Where possible, using a water soluble oil introduces water with superior cooling thus decreasing cycle times.
ETNA Products, Inc. has over 70 years’ experience manufacturing in-house additives which are used to formulate industrial tapping fluids and drilling fluids. We collaborate with our customers and prospects to recommend the appropriate tapping fluid and drilling fluid for their drill bit metallurgy and specifications.
COOLANT MAINTENANCE
We work closely with our customers to monitor their in-use industrial tapping fluids and drilling fluids. Our coolant maintenance program is conducted weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, and consists of testing in-use CNC coolants.
The goal of in-use CNC coolant testing is to extend the life of your microemulsion or neat oil, lower disposal costs, and improve tool life. While in-use in the machine, the drilling fluid or tapping fluid may become contaminated with materials that affect the performance of the CNC coolant and cause odor issues. The materials entering the machine include:
- Tramp oil
- Metal chips and fines
- Bacteria
- Fungus
Once we collect the in-use samples, our Research and Development team thoroughly analyzes and distributes the in-use sample results in a timely manner, allowing our customers to address coolant maintenance issues such as low concentration or pH.
